Pool Ambassador Guide
Thanks for signing up to be a Pool Ambassador. This guide tells you everything you need β why the role matters, how to approach curious onlookers, and what to do before, during, and after a session.
This isn't a sales role. It's just being friendly and helpful.
Why This Role Matters
Every Saturday, there are people at the pool who watch us swim. Some are curious. Some are wondering if they could join. Some have been thinking about learning to swim for months and just needed someone to say hi.
As a Pool Ambassador, you're the bridge between SwimBuddz and those people. One warm conversation can turn a curious onlooker into the next member of the community.
You're not going to close anyone on the spot. The only goal is getting them into our SwimBuddz β New Here? WhatsApp group, where the community and content do the rest.
Before the Session
- Arrive a bit earlier so the Session Lead can brief you
- Save the "SwimBuddz β New Here?" WhatsApp group link on your phone (you'll need it handy to add people)
- Re-read the script below β you don't need to memorise it, just know the flow
During the Session
You're not glued to the poolside. Swim, participate, enjoy the session.
Between your sets or during breaks, scan the area for onlookers. Approach anyone who seems curious. If they're not interested, no problem β move on.
Aim to speak to 2β3 people per session. Some sessions you might get zero conversations β that's fine too. Don't force it.
The Conversation
This is a conversation guide, not a sales pitch. The goal is to be human, answer questions, and offer a low-friction next step.
Step 1 β Open warm and casual
Walk up naturally. Don't wait for them to approach you.
"Hey! I noticed you watching β are you interested in swimming, or just enjoying the view?"
If they seem shy or hesitant:
"No pressure at all β I just wanted to say hi. I'm [Name], I swim with this group."
Step 2 β Read the situation
Listen more than you talk. Let them lead with their questions. The common ones:
"What is this?"
"We're SwimBuddz β a swimming community here in Lagos. We swim together every week. Some of us are learning, some are experienced, we just enjoy it together."
"Can anyone join?"
"Absolutely. We have complete beginners and people who've been swimming for years. Everyone's welcome."
"How much does it cost?"
"Session fees vary depending on what you're joining. The easiest way to find out is to join our WhatsApp group β all the info is there."
"I don't know how to swim."
"That's actually really common here. A lot of our members started exactly where you are. We have coaching classes for beginners too."
Step 3 β Gauge interest
If they're asking questions, they're interested. Move to the close:
"Would you like to join our WhatsApp group? We share session info, photos, and you can ask any questions there. No commitment."
Step 4 β Collect and add
- Take their phone number
- Add them to the SwimBuddz β New Here? WhatsApp group right there
- "I've just added you β you'll see a welcome message in there with everything you need to know."
Step 5 β Warm goodbye
"Great meeting you! My name's [Name] by the way. Feel free to message in the group anytime. Hope to see you in the water soon."
If they're not ready
Some people will just want to watch. That's fine.
"No worries at all. We're here on Saturday every week. If you ever want to know more, just come say hi."
Don't push. The seed is planted.
The Do's
- Be genuinely friendly β people can tell when you're being scripted
- Listen to their questions before jumping into explanations
- Make the WhatsApp group the only ask β never pressure someone to sign up or pay on the spot
- Respect people who aren't interested β smile, step back, move on
The Don'ts
- Don't interrupt people who are clearly not interested
- Don't oversell β "we're a swimming community" is enough
- Don't make promises about pricing, schedules, or coaching you're not sure about. Say "the group has all that info" or "I'll find out for you"
- Don't collect money or promise free sessions
After the Session
- Tell the Session Lead how many people you spoke to and how many you added to the group
- Send a quick follow-up message to anyone you added:
"Hey [Name]! Great meeting you at the pool today. I've added you to our SwimBuddz info group β you'll see a pinned message in there with everything you need to know. If you have any questions, just drop them in the group or message me directly. We swim every [day] β would be great to have you join us!"
Why People Actually Join SwimBuddz
Sometimes a prospect will ask you a deeper question β "why should I join?" or "what makes this different?" Here's the full picture you can share:
Most people try to learn swimming and stop. They take a few lessons, life gets busy, and it never becomes a real part of their life. SwimBuddz exists to make sure that doesn't happen.
We don't just teach you to swim β we make you a swimmer. That means you actually show up consistently, you improve over time, and you have people to swim with long after your first lesson.
How it works:
ππΎ Start with the Academy β a structured beginner cohort where you go from zero to swimming 50 meters with proper freestyle technique. Certified coaches, small groups, every Saturday. You get a certificate when you complete it.
π€ Join a community that keeps you going β After training, you don't swim alone. You join a club group that swims together weekly. Same people, same time. Accountability built in.
π Progress is tracked β You can actually see yourself improving. Challenges, milestones, leaderboards. Not just exercise β a journey with clear markers.
𧴠We handle the things you didn't know to worry about β Like how chlorine affects your skin (we have a dermatologist for that), or which goggles actually fit (community-tested gear recommendations).
π It gets bigger than the pool β Open water swimming trips. In-house competitions. Events both in Nigeria and internationally. You'll swim in places you never imagined when you're just learning to float right now.
π₯ You meet good people β The kind of people who choose to wake up on Saturday morning and do something hard. Professionals, creatives, parents, adventurers. The network builds itself.
Questions?
Ask in the Volunteers WhatsApp group or speak to the Session Lead. We want you to feel confident in the role β the more comfortable you are, the more natural the conversations will be.
Welcome to the team. Let's bring more people into the water. πββοΈ
